(meteorobs) More fireballs with PER than with all other showers?

Hi All,

I can only echo the comments already made. The most recent showers in 2012 gave me 1 fireball in 4 hours during the Perseids maximum and 3 in one exciting 40 minute period of the Geminid maximum.
There is also a piece on YouTube from the NASA news desk which has a very subtle "between the brightness of Jupiter and Venus" in the commentary.
Also, the news item referenced by Dan talks about an "peak average brightness of -2.7 for the Perseids as opposed to -2 for the Geminids"
Neither magnitude is bright enough, by any other definition I can find, to be classed as a "fireball". Various sources use the common definition as brighter than Venus, ie brighter than -4.4 to be classed as a fireball.
So I think the NASA news desk are perhaps guilty of exaggerating to suit their particular agenda, whatever that may be.

Nonetheless, fireballs or not, we should all just get out there and enjoy the show!

Clear Skies,
Cheers,
Bill.
