The American Meteor Society has received over 1000 reports of a bright meteor that occurred near 2000 (8:00pm EDT) on Friday evening March 22, 2013. The witnesses range from along the Atlantic coast from Maine to North Carolina. This object was also seen as far inland as Ohio and Michigan. A small sampling of the reports seem to indicate the primary color was green and that the magnitude was near –13, equivalent to the light produced by a full moon.

Individual reports may be viewed in the 2013 AMS Fireball Table at: http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball_event/2013/667

At nearly 1100 reports, this event is the most reported fireball to the AMS since the table was resurrected back in 2005. The combination of clear skies and an early evening hour on a Friday night contributed to the many sightings. As you can well imagine the witness map is highly congested when viewed at a wide display. It is interesting to note the locations of the outlying witnesses.

Approximately two hours later a second fireball was reported over the same general area which has generated 50 reports.

Clear Skies!
