We had pretty good sky conditions last night for the Taurid meteor complex,
along with a couple of Orionids, and Andromedids. Two slow Andromidid
type speed sporadics seemed to come from a radiant inside the great
square of Pegasus, one of which had a beautiful blue-green colored
corona with a pure white stellar nucleus. A gorgeous 0 magnitude slow
meteor indeed.
The primary meteor producer was the Taurid complex. I observed for three
hours and saw 13 NTA and 13 STA meteors, but most of the bright ones were
from the NTAs, including the brightest meteor of the watch, which was a -4
blue-green beauty low in the North seen at 3:40 UT. Another STA fireball of
-3 magnitude was seen at 4:55 UT. Others were a -2 and a -1 NTA with yellow-
orange colors. I didn’t see any super fireballs, but I did see some very nice
meteors. During a lull in activity I heard some coyotes nearby, and imagined
that they just saw a nice Taurid fireball I missed. Either that, or they thought
their early breakfast was nearby watching the Sky. :-( Gulp. I went back in
the cabin shortly after that. :-)
