Greetings all,
I managed to get in an hour's pre-max Orionid meteor watch this
morning from my trusty rooftop meteor perch here in St. Augustine before
going in to work. I wanted to take advantage of the crystal clear skies
we've been having lately even though the maximum is not until middle of
next week.
It turns out that I was well rewarded indeed during the hour as I
managed to get 22 total meteors with 9 ORIs between 0430 and 0530 EDT this
morning. That's more than I was expecting to be sure. Far too soon to say
how that portends for the actual maximum, however. The dark, clear, sharp
skies this morning helped me out a lot! The faint but beautiful winter
Milky Way stood out sharp as a tack as it crossed the meridian!
Highlights of the eventful hour were:
- Two bright yellow, +2 ORIs that each left nice trains.
- A +3 ORI point meteor seen dead on the radiant.
- A stunning but faint +4 Earthgrazing sporadic shooting slowly up
out of the deep
south. It covered over 50 degrees of sky and I had it in sight
for well over four
seconds total. WOW!
- Two meteors (one epsilon Gemind (EGE) and one Taurid (TAU)
hitting almost
simultaneously -, about one split second apart from one another.
- Two bright, zero magnitude sporadics.
Now that kind of meteor action almost a week out from the ORI maximum I can
definitely hang with...;o). There really was only one about ten minute
lull in the activity about mid-hour as there usually seems to be. The rest
of the time however, the action was brisk and steady. Here's the data:

More later, Paul
