My third and final outing of the August dark window was a post-moonset early morning session. Unlike the previous session, the sky was incredible!! Absolutely gorgeous conditions with above-average transparency and a thick Milky Way in a sea of faint stars! The light dome from Ottawa was significantly smaller than usual. It was very dewy, but the air had a just a slight breeze that kept the air clear. To top it off, a nice subtle aurora was again visible over the tree line. What started as a faint diffuse, bluish glow intensified towards dawn… several arcs and streamers. It was well worth pulling out my camera to get a few captures.

Formal meteor observing went from 2:15am-5am (a two and a half hours of effective observing time). Compared to a week ago, shower activity was much lower. The Perseids were now barely active, as were other minor showers, and nothing got brighter than mag 0. On the plus side, the sporadics rates were very good during the first two hours. The final 30 minutes under gradually brightening twilight was another story... Only four meteors were seen during in that time.
