Joe and All,

Too bad it did not occur while the students and their families were still there. It would have made quite an impression on them and perhaps swayed a few into a more permanent interest in astronomy. Still, it is amazing that the AMS has received over 500 reports on an event that occurred on a work night near 1am. That is a lot of folks that were still awake at such a late hour! Reports are still being submitted so the final total could be several hundred more...

Less than four hours later -- long after we all called it a night -- a stupendously brilliant fireball meteor lit up the skies over parts of the Northeast U.S. and New England.
