Description:
NGC 4517 (10,4magv, 10x1,5'): Appears a a huge and thin 10 x1,5' edge on galaxy
that neary spans across the entire FOV at 342x magnification. It extends roughly E-W
with the W part being slightly brighter. A dark lane does run along the entire edge-on
structure but there is no core or significant central brightening visible. NGC 4517
does also show some faint motted structure at high magnification. Even though
NGC 4517 is so huge, its surface brightness is quite high and it does take high
magnification well - clear skies provided, of course.
NGC 4517A (12,5magv, 4x2,5'): 16' N of NGC 4517. Very faint 3x2' haze of light
without any structure. Difficult at 342x.
NGC 4493 (14,1magv, 1x0,8'): 38' NW of NGC 4517. Faint N-S elongated galaxy
1x0,5' size. Slightly brighter core is visible at 342x.
