Magnification: 131 - 342x
Filter(s): none
Object(s): NGC 3158, NGC 3159, NGC 3161, NGC 3163
Category: Group of galaxies.
Class:
Constellation: LMi
Data: mag 11.9 size 2' x 2'
Position: RA 10:14 DEC +39:
Description:
I could find and identify only 4 members of the Gx cluster around NGC3158. This
brightest (11.9) member is quite an easy target and was visible at 131x. It
appeared
round with a slightly brighter nucleus and a faint halo extending about 1’. North of
3158 I saw NGC3159, 3161, 3163 (13,5-14magv) at 342x. Each galaxy was very
difficult even with averted vision under the poor conditions of that night. None did
show any detail such as a core or elongated shape at 342x. They all appeared as
faint tiny spots of light barely visible against the hazy sky. Good conditions should
reveal more members of the NGC3158-group.
