Observer: Armin Hermann
Your skills: Advanced (many years)
Date/time of observation: 24 06 08
Location of site: Khao Poon Hill, 7km from Kanchanaburi, Thailand (Lat 14 N, Elev 200)
Site classification: Exurban
Sky darkness: 5.6 - 6 changing <Limiting magnitude>
Seeing: 9 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>
Moon presence: None - moon not in sky
Instrument: 15" f/4.5 Obsession
Magnification: 131x, 342x
Filter(s): OIII
Object(s): PNG 359.1-1.7, M1_29, PK 359-1.1
Category: Planetary nebula.
Class:
Constellation: Sco
Data: mag 14.6 size 8"
Position: RA 17:50 DEC -30:35
Description:
Located almost exactly halfway between two 6.7mag stars (sep 25'). There it is
located 2'20" NW of 11.7mag GSC7377:689 at h17.50.18/-30.34.58 EQ2000. At its
location, the PN lies close to a mag stars several arcsec SE of the planetary.
The star is plotted in The Sky 6. There are several stars of 15mag in the
field that are not on the The Sky map. I did find the planetary only because I
applied the OIII at 131x in a "blinking exercise". That way it was fairly
easy. At 342x w/o OIII the PN is barely visible as a tiny blotch of light.
Using the OIII does improve visibility substantially. Now I could see a round
disk of approx 5" with a slightly brighter center. Definitely a challenge! I
chose that PN only because of its location in a field that I scanned earlier.
I though that its location exactly between the two bright stars would help me
find it - it did, and the OIII.
