(meteorobs) meteor spectragraphs

For those who are familiar with making meteor spectragraphs. Do you leave
your shutter open for a certain period of time to catch a fireball that will
leave a spectra image, or do you have a cable that you have ready to trip the
instant a fireball comes into sight? After discussing the questions about the
films staying power over 5 minutes of exposure, it would seem to me that
having a cable to trip the film at the moment a bright meteor is sighted
would have merit in the sense that when the camera's shutter is open it will
be when the film is at it's fastest. Any suggestions here?
