To answer your question, there is a wide variety of voice synthesizers and
"screen reader" software packages currently available.  I use the DECtalk
voice synthesizer along with the "JAWS for Windows" screen reader software,
produced by Henter-Joyce, Inc.

The screen reader software works with Microsoft Windows 3.1, and I use the
free-ware version of Eudora for handling electronic mail.
