(meteorobs) Rotating shutter revisited

In a message dated 96-07-16 18:47:43 EDT, you write:

<< Just a quick question for George: what would you say the source of those
big
variations in rpm for your shutter was, George? Changes in humidity, or some

uncorrected voltage changes from your power source, or what? We've been
testing
with that little tape-recorder motor I mentioned, and haven't seen anything
like
that kind of variation, but then I haven't dragged the thing out into the
dew...

Lew,
Just thought I would say something about my rotating shutter usage of late.
These past several nights of observing, I've had very little fluctuation in
the shutters RPM..dot it's been hanging around 2350 to about 2600...To tell the
truth, it's only displayed one night of extreme RPM change when it dipped
down to the 1400 level. Don't know why? Perhaps Rambo bit into the extension
cord? (Rambo is a big Ram that shares the field with me). Anyhow, last
winter the RPM's hanged around 2100. I feel confident in the stroboscope that
I use by the way. The night that the shutter dipped to 1400 I was able to
tell the difference from the sound it made...different kind of pitch...and it
was apparent visually as well.
