Re: (meteorobs) The AMS

In a message dated 96-07-31 14:51:58 EDT, you write:

<< It seems to me that as far as visual meteor observation goes:

        * The AMS is only interested in sporadic background counts.

        * The IMO is interested in their list of meteors showers, but no
others.

        * The ALPO meteors section is interested in all of the above, plus
other
meteor showers undiscovered or not on the IMO list of meteor
showers.

   Any comments.

If it's a meteor both IMO and NAMN are interested...providing the
observations are done in the prescribed manner...The sporadics are used for
one thing to search for the hidden very weak showers. Also they are
interested in eliminating false showers or one time possibles that shows no
appreciable activity since their initial discovery. Even the showers that has
been eliminated by IMO could be reinstated if the data warrants it...and if
listed as Sporadics, they can easily regain their former status as a shower
if the data shows it's presence...but it's got to go beyond wishful thinking
and a solitary meteor or two by unskilled observers. I've read articles in
IMO's Journal about sporadic activity, so I wouldn't say that IMO isn't
interested in sporadics.
