Re: (meteorobs) Velocity ( formerly what is it?)

Thats one of my two Dumb Beginner question -

The NAMN guide suggests a 1 to 5 assignment. #1 I understand as visible for
several seconds, and 2 I would assume is about one sec +. But what about 3
thru 5? If I use the old "One Mississippi" as a second - how would I break
 #'s 3 thru 5?
Dumb Question 2. - While listening to the WWV for timings. How do you
determine where you are in the count? Do you count the ticks until the
voice
time check, and what happens if another meteor is spotted mid way thru the
count? As I said I have the WWV in the background but usually resort to
looking at my watch anyway. Any advice?

Kevin,
Dumb Question #2 first here - I don't use WWV...I use my glow in the dark
wrist watch. Bob sometimes uses his, but I'm so fast in looking at my watch
that I don't need to listen to WWV all that much.

Dumb Question #1 - Start with a 5 for explanation purposes. A 5 will look
just like a streak...you won't be able to notice the head...a blurr....such
as the Perseids when they occur about 40 degrees from the radiant near the
zenith. A 4 will look just a little slower than a 5, but the head will be
noticeable. As for 2's and 3's, these have the look for most of the meteors
you will see during the first hour or so after sunset for the most part.
During this period, the slowest meteor you most likely will see is a 2...the
next fastest before reaching the 4 and 5 will be a 3. As for 1's, I only seen
about 3 of these so far...so I doubt you will have any trouble confusing
these with the 2's. The 1's are really slow...a little faster than a
satellite.
