Both IMAP and POP3 mail handlers are protocalls used in delivering mail.
They each handle things a little differently, but both do the job well.
POP3 is found on most servers today and is the one used by VAX/VMS mail
daemons. IMAP is usually found on a UNIX server and is the protocall
used by a PINE client.
You spoke of Bill Gates, well he and his crew
refuse to recognize IMAP. He builds his mail clients for POP3 only. The
nice thing about POP3 is it allows downloading of the messages to your
desktop hard drive and then removes the message from the server. This
keeps the storage load on the server to a minimum.
