RE: (meteorobs) PC Temp range

For the group of you interested in the outdoor PC problem. First, Ram does 
have a limiting temperature range but 30degrees is well within the range. 
The problems will be more the video adapter (which get on the tempermental 
side at about 40 degrees. Newer cards are having broader ranges. Peripheral 
devices thru serial and parallel may experience problems(portable 
printers). The CPU itself would not have problems. However, Mike is correct 
at the hard drive situation. The mechanical arm very well may encounter 
frozen moisture problems.
I want to say that the technology that I have seen that has been utilized 
by geophysical expiditions and oceananic explorations are more of a pad 
format and utilize a card type memory that is downloaded to a PC after the 
observations. What a tool if this pad can be implemented with a start 
chart. A portable ram card to hold the info, specifically tracking info and 
fields to enter from a completely encased keypad(touch, no keys). The 
technology already exists I believe it is a matter of the users of such a 
technology to request it. I am trying to connect with a friend that was at 
the show with me to get the company's name. When I get the info I will post 
again.

As a side note, great sporadic sightings of meteors radiating from the NE 
at 1:54 am this morning. I know this is not the formal way but thought I 
would throw this in.

Someone asked a question about PC temperature
tolerance range.  While no expert . . . the main
constraint on temperature would probably be in
the high temperature range.  At the high end
some electronics would not be able to cool off
fast enough and would experience premature
failure -- the microprocessor chip in particular,
perhaps DRAM also.  On the cold end I don't
know that there would be a problem with the
electronics, maybe the problem is with the
mechanics of the disk drive -- mechanical
dimensional tolerances, lubrication not
functioning . . . I don't know.

It is unlikely anyone would provide an
integral environmental support system for
a PC -- and this is kind of what was suggested --
because this would be more expensive and few
people would be willing to pay for this feature,
so the price would be all the more expensive.
