Lew,

The object was photographed and filmed by numerous people, mostly those
vacationing in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. Sky and
Telescope published a big article on this event. I have the issue at home, but
I can't remember the date. It is not 1972. I can check tonight and let you know
tomorrow. The issue has a picture of the Grand Tetons on the front, with the
boat docks at Jackson Lake in the foreground. Up in the sky is a white trail,
with a tear-dropped shaped "head" (the glow around the meteor/asteroid). Inside
was an article which included one complete page showing frames from an 8mm
movie. The movies and snapshots were analysed and a rough orbit was determined.
A couple of years ago Zdenek Ceplecha reanalysed most of the good data. His new
orbit indicated the object would be moving back into Earth's vicinity, but I
can not remember if it was 1997 or 1998.

... BTW, this sounds like it could be an extraordinary thing to watch out for!
Were the perturbations this thing went through from gravity and ablation
measured well enough to reliably predict its resultant orbit?
