Aug 11/12, 1996 Meteor Summary
George Zay
I started my Perseid watch at 4h UT (21h00 PDT) under clear 6.0 skies from
Descanso, Calif. USA. Latitude: 32 deg 50m 00s North, Longitude: 116 deg,
38m 13s West. I observed for an approximate 7.5 Teff hours. My first meteor
of the nite was a +2 magnitude earth grazing Perseid at 21h13m PDT. The
rates steadily increased thru the nite, but never reached the highs as I had
witnessed the previous dark Perseid peaks in recent years. Activity was
never at the "butt kicking" level...but close. The brightest meteors were a
-6 and -7 Perseids and a -4 S. Delta Aquarid. The -6 Perseid had a long
lasting 20 second train with a spectacular burst midway in it's travels. The
-7 perseid had a 14 second train. My hourly meteor rates were as follows:
4h00-5h00 4PER, 1 CAP, 2 SDA, 1 NIA, 3 Spor
5h00-6h00 12 PER, 1 CAP
