(meteorobs) Poconos sighting

George -

Am justing catching up on e-mail, and noticed the Poconos query about the
sighting on August 22 or early August 23. The following article was in 'The
Intelligencer', the newspaper from the small Ontario town of Belleville, about
halfway between Ottawa and Toronto, the Saturday August 24 edition. This object
is reported as Friday night, not Friday morning, but thought you (or Peter
Brown) might be interested...

(by Chris Malette):

A bright light in the evening sky over Quinte Friday was likely an exploding
meteorite, said an official at 8 Wing, CFB <Canadian Forces Base> Trenton.

An officer on duty at wing operations said the base fielded a number of calls at
about 8.30 p.m. about a bright light in the sky northwest of the city.

"We can confirm it was not an aircraft and, judging from what people have told
us, we believe it was likely something like a meteorite that burned up or
exploded in the sky."

Belleville resident Graham MacDonald, who flew bomber missions over Germany in
the Second World War, said he had "never seen anything like it. It wasn't a
UFO, but it was a brilliant flash... at about 10,000 feet."
