The long wave pattern will continue to amplify acropss North America. Strong
height falls are forecast from Alaska to off the west coast of North America.
Ridging will occur over the northern Plains north northeast into central Canada.
Short wave energy moving down the east side of the ridge will help carve out a
trough in the Great Lakes. A cold front will drop southeast across the
mid-atlantic this evening and night with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Winds have shifted into the west northwest now all but southern New England.
Instability not favorable to produce severe thunderstorms due to the lack of
low-level forces. Water vapor imagery shows dry air moving through northern New
England which will enhance convection there. Weak high pressure will build in
on Wednesday with cooler and drier air. Winds will shift into the northeast
late in the day bringing cooler air and rain on Thursday. A cold front will
approach region Friday especially over the southern mid-Atlantic. Hurricane
Hortense is expected to turn northwest and north northeast off Atlantic coast by
Friday as it moves into the influence of the trough. System will continue north
as strong baraclin zone it to its west possibility bringing heavy rains and
winds to New England Saturday and Sunday. Deep moisture along the East coast
should remain far enough to the east to not effect the central Appalachians.

Hurricane Hortense was located at 5pm EDT 20 miles east of Cabo Sumana moving
west northwest at 12. System is expected to continue this motion for the next
24 hours. At this rate system will remain near the northeast Domican Republic
coast tonight. Air Force recon, surface observations and satellite pictures
show that an eye is becoming more defined. At present it appears that a trough
in the eastern Gulf will stir the system north once in the vicinity of the
southeast Bahamas. It appears that the system recurve to the northwest then
north northeast by Friday as it comes under the influence of deep trough over
the Great Lakes. The system is expected to pick up Hortense but expected an
interaction with the trough and the system over the Northeast with heavy rains
especially New England.
