Re: (meteorobs) RE: Leonid max?

For what it is worth, I am expecting a peak Leonid activity of some
ZHR = 100 this year. The maximum may be at around 7h UT or so on
November 17. The maximum is very broad however, almost a day long. Hence, best
rates will probably be in the early morning hours, when the Leonid
radiant is highest in the sky. The outburst will be rich in bright
meteors. All this is based on the behaviour of the shower during its
last return prior to 1965 and the observation that last year's outburst
was not far from the comet node. Hence, this year's outburst will
probably also not be far from the comet node, making 1994 (and 1961)
curious exceptions. Keep an eye out for a possible flurry of faint
Leonids that may announce the dust sheet responsible for the meteor
storms a few years from now.
