Lew, This was an interesting proposal you had that may have some merit. I attempted magnitude estimates during the total lunar eclipse of July 5, 1982. I made my estimates at the zenith using the magnitudes of known stars. The values I obtained ranged from 5.0 at first contact to 7.2 at mid-eclipse. Oh to have that youthful eyesight again! Bob
