catalyst, and so would be useless for eyepieces or lenses. But if not,
they'd be
a whole lot cheaper than one of those Kendrick Dew System dewhickies...

Lew,
I only used that chemical hand warmer for my camera lens once up in Sequoia
in an attempt to keep dew off the lens. It worked pretty good. I don't know
how it will do with frost. No you don't need body warmth as a catalyst. I
believe it reacts to the oxygen in the air. I once had the Kendrick dew
system for my camera lens and it works great...but for some reason it keeps
breaking down every few months and I have to get a new one. Since my last
kendrick, I now keep a hair dryer handy. Also, one of the benefits of a
rotating shutter is that it helps prevent dew from forming on the lens as
well. It keeps the air circulating.
