(meteorobs) Oct. 23 Observations

-- [ From: Robert Lunsford * EMC.Ver #2.5.1 ] --

Joseph Assmus and I spent a frigid 3 hours on top of George Zay's
observatory. The sky was perfectly clear except for a layer of smoke in
the west no higher than 5 degrees altitude. There was no trace of wind
and the brighter stars were just barely twinkling. It was amazing how
dark it became when the gibbous moon set behind the smoke. You could see
it grow darker by the second as if someone had some sort of dimmer
switch for the sky. I counted a total of 79 meteors with 48 of them
belonging to the Orionid shower. There was a distinct lack of bright
meteors tonight. I had only one meteor (a -1 Orionid) brighter than zero
magnitude. Activity was pretty much steady the entire session with lower
counts during the first hour due to moonlight.

This is my last observation until we reach the last quarter moon in
November. Its been a great year for the Orionids.

All hour had an F of 1.00. The TeFF was reduced due to plotting. I was
facing south at an elevation of 70 degrees all night. I used a cassette
recorder for storing data.
