Hey, Thomas. If your telescope can give a WIIIIDE field of view, you'll probably 
see SOME meteors during any given hour of observing. Other folks on the list are 
bona fide experts on this, but my impression is that you want to pick one of the 
"dimmer" meteor shower maxima - or even a "telescopic" shower (a shower so dim 
that it doesn't normally show much activity to the naked eye).

If you're seriously interested in trying out some telescopic observing, Malcolm 
Currie (who subscribes to this list), can help get you started. Otherwise, try 
just sitting out under a dark sky with a lawn chair during the Leonid max, and 
you'll see plenty of meteors with just your two eyes! :)
