RE: (meteorobs) CALL FOR HELP! A talk on meteors...

Lew,

You might want to mention that serious meteor studies started after the
1833 Leoniids, but that the first proof and measurment of a meteor's height
was done by two undergraduate students in Germany named Brades and Benzenberg
(sp?) around 1799 or so. The classic book Meteors, by C.P. Olivier has a good
history review that contain this and more information. C.P. Olivier was
founder of the AMS in 1911 (same year as the AAVSO). He also was the one who
proved the motion of radiants (William Denning in England believed in fixed
radiants), and proved that Halley's Comet was responsable for both the Eta
Aquarids and the Orionids. However, the first meteoriticist (sp?) who proved
the relationship of meteors to comets was Schaperelli (sp?) with the Perseids
and Swift-Tuttle. Of course, these are only a few of the many things that you
could say in your talk.
