The blocking high south of Greenland will persist with a trough in the East.
The pattern will change later in the period with a ridge in the East and a
trough in the West. Temperatures will remain relatively mild across the nation
as a westerly flow persist from the Pacific into the U.S. keeping the Arctic air
to the north. Short wave and associated surface low in the Ohio Valley will
move northeast and deepen and transfer its energy to the southern mid-Atlantic
coast forming a low during Friday. With a blocking high to the north will
result in a easterly flow of moist air around the top of the low and result in
rain heavy at times Friday into Saturday. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches can
be expected across the mid-Atlantic into southern New England. This storm
follows heavy rains of the past couple of weeks and rivers and streams are
running high and soil conditions are quite moist in the East. Heavy rains will
cause rivers and streams to rise to flood stage rapidly. The problem arises
during Saturday as to the speed and direction of the system. Blocking high to
the north ridges down into New England allowing enough cold air to sink south to
allow for some frozen precipitation in New England. System should move faster
than previously as system undercuts block. Precipitation ends later Saturday
across much of the area with precipitation limited to eastern New England.
Colder air moves in Sunday with rain or snow showers. Next system moves into the
Ohio Valley by Tuesday .
