(meteorobs) Dec 12/13, 1996 Geminid Observations ZAYGE

I started my Dec 12/13, 1996 Geminid watch at 20h45 local (4h45 UT) under
clear skies all night...Teff: 8 hours. I observed from the top of my
observatory in Descanso, California. LM near 6.0 all nite. The last period
LM averaged near 5.8. Each observing period includes about 2 minutes Camera
dead time. My highest 1 hour raw count is 86 between 10h17-11h19 UT
(2h17-3h19 local). My impression of this years shower to that of 1993 was
that it's a little more active, but with a lot lesser numbers of brite
members. I only had 1 Geminid that was a fireball (-4).  In 1993 I had 8. My
1993 Mean Magnitude was 1.74. This years was a little dimmer 1.98.
Tonights weather forecast is clear again and I intend to make another 8 hour
run.

Geminids = 397
Monocerotids = 14
Hydrids = 8
Coma Berenicids = 9
Puppids = 1
Sporadics = 42
Total meteors = 471

Geminid Magnitude Distribution:
(-4)1, (-2)5, (-1)16, (0)44, (+1)50, (+2)134, (+3)90, (+4)51, (+5)5
Mean = 1.98

Observing Periods:
(All times in U.T.)

4h45-5h46  = 28 GEM
5h46-6h48  = 32
6h48-7h50  = 46
7h50-8h52  = 51
8h52-9h55  = 44
9h55-10h17 = Break Period
10h17-11h19= 86
11h19-12h21= 65
12h21-13h31= 46

Activity seemed to be dropping quite suddenly as dawn approached. It will be
interesting to see what everyone else has. The Brass Monkey factor for the
nite is 11. The last 3 hours was hitting 2/hour. I had ice on top of the
observatory..dot it was definitely in the mid twenties.
