Funny you should you should mention it, I asked that question. The Gamma
Ray collisions produce a much fainter flash, but it is also in the form
of a ring, this is why they use arrays of up to 100 photomultipliers to
form a crude 'image'. Also since these flashes are very short CCD
cameras are ineffective too.
