In a message dated 97-01-30 01:12:16 EST, you write:

<< About the comet's newness, has anyone managed to measure the albedo of the
nucleus yet, to see how much dark schmutz (that's the technical term, I
believe) it's coated with? Fresh Oort cloud nuclei are supposed to have
extremely high albedoes (or so I'm told - I always believe what I'm told.

I don't know that but...in a lecture by John Bortle (S&T's comet guy) I
attended -he said that H-B was definitely here before. At least once but no
more than 4 X. He quoted some calculations by Marsden as evidence.
