Re: (meteorobs) micrometeorites/dust collecting

Nice going, Becky! Michael is actually subscribed to 'meteorobs-digest' (which isn't to say he has time to read it), but a personal meeting with him is a great opportunity! I'll bite with a few questions myself: :>

1) In analyzing the material from a "scoop", what all techniques does his team use to separate meteoric material from general atmospheric schmutz?

2) How do they correct for all the contaminating "background" meteoric material in their samples that WASN'T from the particular observed bolide?

And some more "just curious" type questions:

3) How does the pilot navigate into the bolide path? Is there actually any kind of visual identification that they can do? (What a neat thought! :>)

4) Do they ever get fragments large enough to be analyzed for point of origin (a la the Mars meteorites from Antarctica, or asteroid fragments)?

5) Does his team also get alerts from the DoD surveillance satellite network, or military radar or seismic monitoring stations, about potential bolides?

Guess that's enough for one visit! Be sure to post what happened when you get back from your meeting, Becky, and thanks!! Clear skies,

Lew
