Go out on your largest available mountain during a meteor shower and observe
the energy that a small pebble or flake of dust releases as it goes through the
atmosphere at tens of km. per second.  Imagine the largest rock you can see
going through the atmosphere and outshining the Sun briefly as it violently
explodes.  Now imagine that same mountain going through the atmosphere as if it
were not there and hitting the ground at that speed.  I would refer you to a
Sky and Telescope article by Ed Tagliaferri several years ago.  The New York
Times has also had some well written articles last
year.
