During the flood of 93 on the Mississippi River, PBS did a documentary on
flood control on the river. As a aprt of this, they lected to interview
engineers with the St. Louis district of the Corps of Engineers. Our Company
has environmental services and analytical contracts with the District, so I
was interested to find out how the special was filmed. On talking with the
engineers who were interviewed, the producers led them down a primrose path,
then ambushed 'em on the river. Apparently, the District was told the
special was to be how the Corps handled flood control work, but the final
edited version was a hatchet job on the Corps and it "mismangement of the
river." Needless to say, the St. Louis District will not be doing anymore
work with TV producers due to the network's lack of ethics in production.
So, even though the experts are consulted, the networks are apparently going
to dictate what the public sees to ensure ratings, not science.

Seems to me that NBC's astrodisaster appeared to be a thinly veiled promo
for FEMA. After having lived through the floods of 93 and 95 on the
Mississippi, there are lots of folks around here who could give an
in\teresting opinion of FEMA/IEMA (Illinois Em. Mgt. Assoc.).
