IAU/UAI Commission 22 (Meteors and Interplanetary Dust) Newsletter April 1997

IAU XXIIIrd General Assembly Kyoto, Japan 18-30 August 1997

The XXIIIrd General Assembly is rapidly approaching (August 18-30, 1997) in
Kyoto, Japan. Details on the scientific program and local arrangements have
been circulated to all IAU members in IAU Bulletins 78 and 79 (full
information is also available on the WWW at http://www.tenmon.or.jp/iau97/)
. Members are reminded that the reduced registration rate deadline is April
30, 1997, and that the separate registration forms for hotel accomodations
should be sent in as soon as possible, and June 30, 1997 at the latest.

The following items on the program for the XXIIIrd GA will be of particular
interest to IAU Commission 22 members.

Aug 21 11-12:30 Commission 20 Business and Science Meeting
Aug 21 14:00 to17:30 Commission 22 Business and Science Meeting
Aug 22 & 23 Joint Discussion 6: Interactions Between Planets and Small Bodies
Aug 25 & 26 Joint Discussion 13: Detection and Study of Planets Outside the
Solar System
Aug 26 16:00 Commission 20 Business Meeting
Aug 27 9:00 to 12.30 Joint Discussion 23: The Leonid Meteor Storms, Historical
Significance and Upcoming Opportunities.

Note that there is room for a few science papers related to the work of
Commission 22. Proposals should be submitted to Iwan Williams
(I.P.Williams@qmw.acdot uk).

Nominations for IAU Commission 22 Officers:
Those wishing to propose officers for the Commission for the period
1997-2000 are urged to forward them as soon as possible to the current
Commission 22 President - Iwan Williams (I.P.Williams@qmw.acdot uk). The
following proposals have been received for 1997-2000:
President: W.J. Baggaley (New Zealand)
Vice-President: V. Porubcan (Slovakia)
Secretary: R.L. Hawkes (Canada)
The Executive will be elected at the Commission 22 Business Meeting in Kyoto.

Nominations for IAU Commission 22 Organising Committee:
It has been usual to have an Organising Committee for the Commission. The
proposal is to have President, Vice-President, Secretary, Past-President
and about 3 to 4 additional members. Your proposals for these additional
members should be sent to Iwan Williams (I.P.Williams@qmw.acdot uk). The
Organising Committee will be elected at the Commission 22 Business Meeting
in Kyoto.

Nominations for Commission Members and Consultants:
Suggestions for IAU Commission 22 Members (from those who are already IAU
members of other commissions, or who are being nominated for IAU
membership by their national committees) should be submitted to Iwan
Williams (I.P.Williams@qmw.acdot uk). Also, proposals for new consultants to
the commission.

Nominations for Working Group on Professional Amateur Cooperation:
It is anticipated that a fairly major restructuring of this working group
will take place for the next three year period under a new chair.
Suggestions for membership and the new chair for the working group should
be sent to Jack Baggaley (PHYS051@cscdot canterbury.ac.nz). This Working Group
typically includes a mix of IAU Commission 22 members, and nonmembers who
are elected to consultant status for the three year period.

Reviews of Research:
As has been the custom for some years, IAU Commission 22 has provided the
meteor and dust portion of Reports on Astronomy which will be published by
Kluwer Academic Publishers for the IAU in 1997 in conjunction with the IAU
General Assembly. The executive made a particular effort to involve a
number of the younger members of the commission in the review. The reviews
were written by:
An introductory section (Iwan Williams & Bob Hawkes)
Photographic Meteors, Fireballs & Spectroscopy (Pavel Spurny & Jiri Borovicka)
Meteor showers & meteoroid stream evolution (Peter Brown & Jim Jones)
Meteoroid orbits (Duncan Steel)
Radar Meteors (Andrew Taylor & Graham Elford)
TV Meteors (Bob Hawkes)
Dust Characteristics (Ingrid Mann & Eberhard Grun)
Tektites and impact glasses (Christian Koeberl)
Meteors and aeronomy (Jack Baggaley)
The review (which was completed in September 1996) covers work published in
the period July 1, 1993 to June 30, 1996. The reviews are currently
available in electronic form on the Commission 22 WWW page at
http://aci.mtadot ca/TheUmbrella/Physics/Meteor/IAU22

Updated IAU Commission 22 WWW Pages:
The WWW location of Commission 22 is located at:
http://aci.mtadot ca/TheUmbrella/Physics/Meteor/IAU22
This site, which has recently undergone significant upgrading, contains a
number of resources for the meteor and dust research communities. All
future IAU Commission 22 Newsletters and Announcements will be archived at
this site. An Email address list is on site (and we hope to add a complete
membership directory soon). A variety of links to meteor resources,
national and international meteor organizations, a list of relevant
conferences, links to many of the periodicals which publish articles on
meteors, links to home pages of meteor researchers, the review (1993-96) of
research in meteors and dust, etc. We urge you to take a look at this
site, and to make suggestions for additions. Note also that we now have a
notice board on the first page, which we will periodically update with
announcements.

About Future Newsletters:
>From time to time Commission 22 has issued printed newsletters. Starting
with this issue we are only mailing printed copies to those active members
for whom we do not have an email address. The production and mailing of the
printed form of the newsletters involves a significant cost which has been
borne by members of the commission executive and their institutions. Partly
for this reason, and because of increasing use of Internet resources by the
majority of active IAU Commission 22 members, printed newsletters will not
be provided in the future. Newsletters are also available on the World Wide
Web (WWW) at the IAU Commission 22 home page
(http://aci.mtadot ca/TheUmbrella/Physics/Meteor/IAU22). All IAU members will
continue to receive the printed Information Bulletins which are issued by
the IAU Secretariat. We also welcome your input for items to be included in
future electronic newsletters (send to rhawkes@mtadot ca).
