As Lew stated in his reply to Bob Metz, meteor observing IS the best way to 
learn the sky.
I think it's one of the biggest side benefits. I challenge almost anyone 
(not you, Kevin) in my astronomy club to go one on one with me on 
identifying the constellations. You really do get intimate with all the 
stars; especially during this time of the year when you have PLENTY of time 
between meteors. If it's ever clear, he sighed.
