SPAM ON METEOROBS (was Re: (meteorobs) SECRETS TO THE INTERNET!!)

Howdy, all! Obviously, our lively little email mailing list has finally
become prey to the "hyenas of the Internet" - i.e., unscrupulous,
thoughtless people who seek to flood the Internet with "Junk Email" in
order to squeeze a few bucks from a medium they don't even bother to
understand first...

As we all know, 'meteorobs' ISN'T a personal email address, but an email
LIST dedicated to the scientific discussion of METEORS (shooting stars) and
their observation by amateur astronomers. Since the above little bit of
spam got posted to our list, at least three of us have been lured into
RESPONDING to the message on 'meteorobs', thereby perpetuating the spam!

IF THE LIST WOULD PREFER, I can change things so that ONLY subscribers can
post to 'meteorobs' without my approval. This should screen out most of the
spam. Non-subscribers would STILL be able to post to 'meteorobs', but I'd
have to approve such posts personally. When I'm away however (and I do take
vacation!) this might mean that fireball reports from 'civilians', major
shower queries, and other potentially interesting posts might not get out
in a timely way.

Please let me know what you all think about this. And in the meantime, if
you see another message like the above coming to you via meteorobs, please
DON'T send a "REMOVE" message to meteorobs: instead, make sure it goes to
the SENDER! (In this case, the culprit was a - probably bogus - address
cwolf@bmcweb.com).

Clear skies, and many meteors!
