(meteorobs) Aug 6 Meteor Observations (Finally Caught Up!)
-- [ From: Robert Lunsford * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] --
I observed for 4 hours this morning with George Zay from the Descanso
Observatory. I counted at total of 97 meteors out of which 41 were
Perseids and 33 sporadics. The North Delta Aquarids have now surpassed
the SDA's in strength. The highlight of the night was a tremendous -10
Perseid that shot down toward the northern horizon and left a nice 22
second train over the mountains in that direction. The flash was
brilliant, like lightening, as George and I almost got whiplash turning
our heads to see this fireball. I certainly hope this is a sign of
things to come! One last note, this was one of the worst night I can
recall in Descanso regarding LM. The entire western sky was bathed in
skyglow from the city. The haze was evident as planes with floodlamps
traced out a good 30 degree beam in front of it as it flew past us. I
have had better night up here with a last quarter moon present!
