A big fireball was seen crossing the sky over Salvador city in the Northeast
of Brazil, South America. It occurred on Friday, August 8, 1997 at 7:15 PM
local time (22:15 GMT). According to witnesses the firebal appeared a little
above the South Cross or 40º(40 degrees) approximatelydot its direction was
toward the East and it disapeared on the horizon over the Atlantic ocean.
According to amateur-astronomer Hilton Ruffini who saw the fireball it came
from Southwest and was travelling to Southeast. Another astronomer, Mr.
Gemicre Nascimento, from Antares Observatory, in Feira de Santana, Bahia
state, the fireball lasted 1 minute and 15 seconds and its lenght was about
10 (ten degrees). It is certain that the fireball desapeared on the ocean,
but some fragments were seen falling over a bush field near a town named
Dias d'Avila (coordinates: 12º39'13.8" 38º16'02.8"). Witnesses said that
some firetears dropped from the main body and felt over the ground where
they burned for a few seconds. Preliminary search on that site was negative
regarding any rock or piece of iron findings.

Fortunatelly a ufologist filmed the fireball for 30 seconds. I will get a
copy of that tape in VHS in order to better analyse the fireball trajectory
 and speed.
