(meteorobs) Nov. 7 Meteor Observations

-- [ From: Robert Lunsford * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] --

I observed for just under 5 hours this morning with George Zay at the
Descanso Observatory. Activity slightly better than yesterday as I
counted a total of 66 meteors. The fog extended further inland this
morning blocking more skyglow from the city and the darker sky was
evident. Early in the session the Gegenschein was easily visible 10
degrees west of the Pleiades. Later in the session the zodiacal light
was even more impressive this morning looking much like dawn long before
astronomical twilight. It also rendered the LM counting area in Leo
useless due the the intense display. Once again the Northern Taurids
made a strong showing and the Southern branch was more active than
yesterday. The Orionids are still hanging in there averaging 1-2 per
hour.

0900-1000 UT 0.95 6.70 4 NTA 1 ORI 3 STA 2 SPO 10 TOTAL

1000-1100 UT 0.91 6.69 2 ORI 2 STA 9 SPO 13 TOTAL

1100-1200 UT 0.90 6.62 3 NTA 2 ORI 1 STA 11 SPO 17 TOTAL

1200-1300 UT 0.92 6.47 1 NTA 1 STA 11 SPO 13 TOTAL

The data includes: Universal time for each block of time, actual
fraction of an hour spent watching, average limiting magnitude for each
block of time, and shower activity seen. NTA = Northern Taurid, ORI =
Orionids, STA = Southern Taurid, SPO = sporadic (random meteors).

The sky was clear the entire morning. There were no obstructions and no
breaks were taken. I faced southeast at an altitude of 70 degrees all
morning.
