Re: (meteorobs) Leonid Observations from Goldstone (Bob Lunsford)

Doggone, Bob! Seems like the East Coast just missed the show! You were
starting to see Leonid rates pick up (beginning with that fine fireball)
just about the time I was fighting Boston traffic trying to weasel my way
back to my house for a nap! (I ended up getting an hour in before work...)
:( Seems like some sort of secondary peak DID occur as predicted then,
only an hour or so after the most recent 10:40UT theoretical estimate?

Well, I guess next year holds out more hope for us Right-Coasters! By the
way, I noticed something interesting in your descriptions: you mentioned
that the gibbous moon was IN YOUR FIELD OF VIEW for the first part of your
counting session. I was wondering about the reasoning behind this?

I know you like to keep a constant 70o elevation in your CFV. But is it
really important enough to ALSO keep a constant radius distance, that
you'll actually put up with direct moonlight to do it? For myself, I made
an effort to keep the moon OUT of my FOV during my whole session - moving
to four different field centers during the night!

Clear skies!
Lew, hoping to learn more about moonlight observing
