To answer Terry's question more directly:  The atmospheric absorption
effect applies to both stars and meteors equivalently because of the
extremely high altitude at which meteors occur.    This is the band just
above the mesopause (80 to 120 km).  Any difference in extinction due to
the atmosphere above this height is negligable.
