george's "heat model" is accurate.
two points worth amplifying:
1- thermodynamically, a meteoroid's burn through the atmosphere is not
unlike fried ice-cream - the deep chill of the core rapidly absorbs any heat
on the core's surface;
2- the final stage of descent for most meteorites actually cools them off:
the slowly final speed acts as a nice breeze;
