Re: (meteorobs) Asteroids TV program

In a message dated 98-01-01 18:20:00 EST, you write:

<< they said that for a rocket with a nuclear device to deflect the asteroid
we would need a few months or years notice, and it would be impossible
to launch a rocket now if one was heading towards us.

Why? I'm sure the USSR and USA have rockets that could be put on standby
in case of a real problem and launched...with all our so-called
modern technology it could be done, or is it just talk? >>

The number one problem is that we aren't able to find them in time. The story
that I'm sure every one's heard is a fact: There are more people behind the
counter in a local McDonald's then there are searching the skies worldwide
looking for these things.

There was a meteoroid (last year) that went by only 2X the Earth and Moon
distance and no one found it until 3 or 4 days AFTER it went by. There's no
way we can keep track of these things and make new discoveries at the same
time, so I wouldn't even worry about it. It's happened before its destined to
happen again. Maybe tomorrow maybe in 2 million years, why worry. Think about
all those people who built bomb shelters in their backyards in the 50's...
