I woked  in a HF forward scatter radar
system back in 1973-1975 would be 
happy to advise.  You probably were
seeing on two different hop structures 
and different aspects of the fireball
shockwave going throught the 
ionosphere.  Persistance trails can 
give recombination signatures after the 
shockwave is spent.
