Re: (meteorobs) 1998 Eta Aquarids May 2 - 10

Dear Ron:

You've chosen an excellent spot for a vacation! Since the tradewinds blow from
the northeast, they create clouds and rain on the north and east sides of the
islands. I live a quarter-mile from the ocean on the north shore of Kauai,
where the trades give us beautiful rainbows and lush vegetation, but not-so-
good skies for astronomy.

Your best bet is to head for the west and south sides of the island. (The
clear skies and sunshine make the daytime activities better, too.) You can
also head for the top of Haleakala (around 11,000 feet elevation) which should
have very clear skies. Of course, you must prepare for freezing temperatures.

If you get a chance, consider a three-day side trip to either Kauai or the Big
Island.

Aloha,

John
