(meteorobs) eta Aquarids

Dear All

Well, after the Virginids and pi Puppids, our clear weather here has
continued into the eta Aquarids, the best cloudless period we've had in
three years. But the etas are not up to their usual standard this year by
my reckoning, as evidenced by the summary below:

Date UT Teff LM ETA May Caps LYR SPO Total
Apr 28/29 0210-0335 1.42 5.50 2 4 1 8 15
Apr 29/30 0125-0335 2.16 5.55 8 3 1 11 23
Apr 30/1 0200-0330 1.50 5.25 11 2 1 11 25
May 1/2 0150-0335 1.75 5.50 8 2 0 8 18
May 2/3 0125-0330 2.08 5.90 17 7 0 11 35
May 3/4 0120-0325 2.00 5.75 15 5 0 13 33

At times, there are periods of up to 45 minutes without seeing any etas.
The next 2 days will see if it is indeed a flat maximum. Koos van Zyl, also
observing from South Africa, also has low rates. Anyone else down south out
observing with similar results?

Took a glancing blow this morning from an Iridium satellite. While
observing I caught sight of it brightening just upper right of Vega. It
brightened to mag -4. Though spectacular I hope these things don't become a
pest.

Cheers
Tim
