THE OTTAWA ASTRO OBSERVERS GROUP 1998 / | \
- - - - |
A few of us in Ottawa (Ontario, Can) have been conducting a survey
recently during a small starparty for a local science museum. We wanted
to know what the public thought about being outside to enjoy the stars
while sharing their interest with others. Many people agreed they would
like to go out more often if only they would know where and when such an
event would take place. They would also feel more encouraged to go out
feeling "invited and welcomed" to the event rather to think they are
"imposing" on people's property and their activities.
A few years ago, a local observer fed up with "big organisation"
politics and excuses for not organising more observing sessions simply
posted a small ad in the local astronomy store inviting people (both
newcomers and veterans) to come and observe at his site below the airport
for one evening. His response has been phenomenal. Dozens of cars came in
and parked along the gravel road. They enthusiatiscally attended the
observing session and really had a great time under the stars making new
friends.
This summer, we are attempting to advertise locally to let more people
know who we are and what we do. Our small independant "group" is very
informal; we call each other before a promising night, select our
observing site and off we go! Our observing interests is wide spread
such as planetary and deep sky observing, astrophotography, CCD imaging,
meteor observing, solar and radio. We are working now to find a suitable
observing site under dark skies (something with a limiting magnitude at
least 6.5) that would be safe and easily accessible to anyone in the
region, regardless of the equipement they want to bring.
We would like to post advertisement for a "starparty" so that many people
in the community can easily see it (local newspapers, radio anouncements
web site,...). Just to let people know they dont have to observe alone
all the time. Astronomy can be something social.
The OAOG group is open to any suggestions, input or comments you would
like to bring. If this is the case, please send me a private email at:
