Re: (meteorobs) FWD: Recreational summer meteors?

By the way, Keith, one other piece of advice: as you know, in our video-game
culture it is really, really hard to get kids' attention. Even the Perseids at
their finest are not likely to produce the kind of visual show that will make
younger kids jump up and scream: even a Leonid meteor storm (when the sky would
seem to "fill with falling fire" and 10 meteors might be seen per second!) may
not compare with seeing a Summer Blockbuster: for one thing, meteors don't have
the benefit of Dolby Stereo. :)

So if you want to make your meteor watches a time which kids (or some of them
at least) will enjoy and remember fondly, be sure to put the activity in
perspective: DON'T sell them on what a thrilling show the meteors will be, but
rather sell them on how rare and beautiful a clear, quiet, dark-sparkling sky
can be in the early dawn: then if the meteors DO put on a show, with lots of
brighter ones and maybe some persistent "smoke" trains, you'll REALLY get their
attention! Clear skies, and good luck!
