(meteorobs) Re: one casual June Bootid
Saturday night 1998 June 28/29 Joan and I arrived home before midnight from
our monthly hearts game. I let the dogs out the back, and went out myself
to look for a minute. Within seconds there was an intense orange slow -2m
meteor with slight fragmenting, lasting 2 seconds. It was close to, and
parallel to, the line determined by Spica and Arcturus. Checking a chart
last night, it looks like a definite June Bootid.
Had I known something was going on, I could have watched a while longer.
Meteorobs let us down at a most inopportune time, as mail checking a couple
of times during the day had no mail incoming. The sky was smoky and hazy
from all the fires around Florida, limiting the sky Sat night to about +1 or
+2 in the best spots. Better than a complete cloudout for a major shower.
This was quite a lengthy unexpected event lasting a full day, it sounds
like. Most of the surprises seem to last only an hour or less.
