(meteorobs) Another wonderful IRC "meteor chat" yesterday!

Yesterday's "#namn" meteor chat was once again well-attended (12
participants during the session), and again fascinating! Representatives
were present from AT LEAST 3 countries: USA (5), Canada (3), Australia (2).

Among the many topics touched on was the intriguing meteor (and fireball)
outburst noted last month, possibly attributable to the June Bootids. Among
the participants were two (from Australia) who actually witnessed the
event, even though the June Bootid radiant (which they agree appeared to be
the source) was actually BELOW THE HORIZON for them at the time!

Also discussed: large unexplained variations in meteor rates for the
Perseids and Aquarid/Capricornid complex over the past 20 years; huge
disparities in Kappa Cygnid shower rates between European and US observers
(and a perhaps misleading item on KCYs in this month's "Astronomy"
magazine); differences in observed maximum date for the South Delta
Aquarids (SDA) between IMO and non-IMO data (with observers present tending
to agree the peak is closer to July 29/30 than July 28); preparations for
the upcoming West Virginia Canada/Eastern-US Meteor Gathering; and of
course, perennial complaints (and rejoicing) at weather conditions
worldwide. <grin>

Here's hoping the expanding scope (and audience) of these fine real-time
chats will continue into High Meteor Season unabated! Clear skies all,

Your faithful reporter,
Lew Gramer
